Who Can Get Married in Dubai?

In Dubai, Muslims and non-Muslims can get married, but the steps are different for each group based on their religion and where they live.

🕌

Sharia (Islamic) Marriage

For Muslim Couples in Dubai
  • ✓Both people are Muslims. Or the bride is Christian or Jewish (Ahl Al-Kitab), and the groom is Muslim.
  • ✓UAE residents and visitors can apply for Sharia marriage in Dubai, as long as at least one party is a UAE resident.
  • ✓A Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man unless he converts to Islam and provides proof.
  • ✓Polygamy is permitted for Muslim men, with a limit of up to four wives, provided that each wife is treated equally in terms of financial, emotional support, and care.
  • ✓Both partners must be at least 18 years old.
  • ✓Couples must agree to the marriage of their own free will.
  • ✓Both the groom and bride must be single at the time of application.
🏛️

Civil Marriage

Available for All Religions in Dubai & Abu Dhabi
  • ✓Civil marriage is available to individuals of any religion, except UAE nationals.
  • ✓Both partners must be at least 18 years old.
  • ✓Couples must agree to the marriage of their own free will.
  • ✓Both the groom and bride must be single.
Non-UAE resident and tourist couples can get married through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department Courts.

Which One Should You Choose?

This is one of the most common questions we get. Both marriage types are available in the UAE, but the rules are different.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Muslim Couples

Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi Courts offer Sharia marriage. We can assist with either option depending on your residency and preference.

Non-Muslim with UAE Residency

If at least one of you is a Dubai resident, you can register your civil marriage in Dubai. Otherwise, Abu Dhabi works for residents of any emirate.

Tourist Couples

Abu Dhabi is your best option — no residency requirement. Express service lets you choose your ceremony date within 2 to 3 business days.

Mixed Religion Couples

If the groom is Muslim and the bride is from Ahl Al-Kitab, Sharia marriage may apply. Otherwise, civil marriage is available regardless of religion.

Documents Required for Marriage in Dubai

Paperwork is the part of the process that causes the most delays. Here is exactly what you need depending on your marriage type.

🕌

Sharia Marriage in Dubai

  1. Valid original passports for both the bride and groom
  2. Emirates ID for both partners (if applicable)
  3. Premarital medical screening certificate from an approved UAE health center
  4. Bride's guardian (Wali) present with his passport or Emirates ID (if applicable)
  5. No guardian (Wali) relative certificate from the bride's embassy (if her guardian is unavailable)
  6. Two male Muslim witnesses with valid passports or Emirates ID (if applicable)
  7. Attested and translated divorce certificate (if previously married)
  8. Attested and translated death certificate of former spouse (if widowed)
  9. Proof of conversion to Islam with supporting documentation (if the bride or groom has converted)
🏛️

Civil Marriage in Dubai

  1. Valid original passports for both partners
  2. Emirates ID for the resident partner
  3. Marital status certificate or single status letter issued by your embassy, attested
  4. Divorce certificate (if previously divorced)
  5. Attested death certificate (if widowed)
🏢

Civil Marriage in Abu Dhabi

  1. Valid original passports for both partners (copy and original)
  2. Emirates ID (if applicable — for UAE residents)
  3. Proof of entry/stay in the UAE — tourist visa, e-visa, or entry stamp (for non-residents)
  4. Divorce certificate (if previously divorced)
  5. Death certificate (if widowed)
  6. Prenuptial Agreement (optional): The Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court provides a standard template, or we can assist you with a customised agreement tailored to your needs.

Important: How Document Attestation Works

All foreign documents must go through a specific attestation chain. This is where most couples lose time. Wrong stamps, missing translations, or outdated documents are the top reasons applications get rejected or delayed.

  1. Get your documents stamped by your home country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  2. Get them attested by the UAE Embassy in your country
  3. Get final attestation from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)
  4. Get certified Arabic translation by a UAE Ministry of Justice approved translator

We review every document before submission to make sure nothing gets sent back.
